Featured Review from Nashville Scene
April 24, 2013The absence of a free, outdoor summer concert series held in downtown Nashville has been lamented since the cessation of popular events of yesteryear like Dancin’ In the District and Uptown Mix. Fortunately, Live on the Green has resuscitated the free outdoor series for Nashville, and new events like Southern Ground Fest and AmericanaramA (both set to take place this summer at The Lawn at Riverfront Park) are bringing stellar live music to the riverfront. This morning, we learned that another live music series is getting a second life.
In a press conference at LP Field this morning, Mayor Karl Dean announced the “Nashville Dancin’” series. A nod to the other “Dancin’” series with an updated moniker — and logo — this family-friendly concert series will be held Thursday nights from June 13 until Aug. 1.Mayor Dean — who was introduced by GAC’s Storme Warren as “Nashville’s Best Friend" — touched upon Nashville’s “it” status of late, and stated that the relaunched concert series would celebrate Nashville’s status as a creative center.
Title sponsor Dollar General chairman/CEO Rick Dreiling announced that the event would offer free parking for all attendees, provided by the Titans. He then passed the mic to series founder Tom Morales, who explained the conceptualization of the event back in the early ‘90s, and how Dancin’ was always intended to celebrate the community spirit and the pride of Nashville. Morales estimated that the event will draw 10,000 to 15,000 attendees to downtown Nashville each week, having a positive economic impact (approximately $5 million) on the city, particularly the businesses that will benefit from pre- and post-concert activity.
The event is open to all ages (but no dogs — Morales said the biggest fights in the past involved dogs, so go figure) and the perimeter will be surrounded by a fence for security. No backpacks or coolers will be allowed, but organizers promised an abundance of food trucks and beverage station options.
In addition to keeping the event free for all, Morales said that the lineup would feature four acts per night and promised a diverse group that will span many genres. He also said that event organizers would heavily mine from talented local acts.- Abby White
